Bagehot, Walter

Bagehot, Walter (1826–77),
English economist and constitutional theorist. His essay ‘Shakespeare’ (Prospective Review, 1853), revised as ‘Shakespeare: The Individual’ and retitled as ‘Shakespeare the Man’ in Hutton's 1879 edition, displays limited biographical knowledge, but derives a sympathetic and sentimental picture of Shakespeare's character from a reading of the plays.
