Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
Rossetti, Dante Gabriel (1828–82),English painter and poet. A founding member of the Pre‐Raphaelite Brotherhood (1848), Rossetti developed a highly personal subject‐matter and symbolism inspired by medieval poetry (particularly Dante). Although his later work was almost entirely devoted to sensuous allegorical images of women, earlier paintings included many subjects from medieval literature, including the Arthurian cycle. Closest in feeling to a fairy tale is ‘The Wedding of St George and Princess Sabra’ (1857); Rossetti gives the legend a magical happy ending in a gold‐and‐crimson chamber, with the dragon's head nearby in a wooden box.
